What did you learn about the cameras and editing software during the preliminary task?
When making the preliminary task all the people in our group were unfamiliar with using a video camera so at the beginning of the task we tried experimenting with the different camera angles that we have perviously been studying. We wanted to experiment with this to get an idea of how filming looks when compared with our initial thoughts on paper. This would help us when planning our main task. It was also the first time that anyone in our group had used Final cut Pro so after we had shot the footage for our preliminary task we learnt how to use the basic techniques that it involves, such as, Log and capturing. this would make it easier and more effective when we came to edit out main task using the same software.
In the filming and editing of your project, what worked well and what could have been improved?
We thought that the opening of our film worked well as we made sure that when editing the footage later on the shots linked together seemlessly. We did this to create a professional overall finish to the task. The opening of the door shot worked well as me made sure that the door was open at the same point on either side so it made the audience belived that it was filmed with two cameras at the same time to create a seemless finish. During the filming we tried to use a number of different camera angles to get to grips on where the camera needed to be iin place in order to create a professional finish which would help with our main task. However there were a number of problems with our preliminary task. The video camera that we used to shoot the footage did not pick up any sound so when it came to editing the film you could not hear the dialogue between the two characters. We also broke the 180 degree rule during the conversation. We shot the conversation over the opposite shoulders of the characters, breaking the line. We only realised our mistake when it came to editing the film.
Give a detailed, specific example of how you have used a shot/reverse shot combination in your film.
Within our preliminary task we used shot reverse shot during the conversation between jordan and Jermaine in the canteen after Jermaine had entered the room. We did this to highlight the expressions of the characters to make the film more interesting. We started with an over the shoulder shot of Jermain so the audience could see Jordan's face as he was the one who began the conversation. The majority of our film is shot/reverse shot of their conversation as we wanted to get to grips with this particular feature in case we wanted to use it later in our main task.
Give a detailed, specific example of how you achived match cuts during the editing process.
We used a match cut to film Jermaine walking through the doors and into the canteen as we thought that this was the best oppertunity to use this feature. We began by filming hikm walking up to the door and starting to open it. We then placed the camera inside the room that he was entering and filmed him walking through the door, making sure that the door was open as much as it had been in the previous shot, and walking into the room.
How did you make sure that you didn't break the 180 degree rule? Or if you broke it, what have you learnt from this?
We did break the 180 degree rule but we only realised this when we began to edit the film.
We decided to still use this shot for the task but we wanted to make sure that we highlighted the fact that we knew this was a continuity error within our film. We realised the by filming the shot reverse shot from opposite shoulders of the characters in the conversation we had crossed the line and therefore broke the rule. From this we have learnt to film all of our footage from one side of the action in our scene ot make sure that the rule is not broken within our main task.
